The Cuckoo’s Calling

The Cuckoo’s Calling by J K Rowling

I’m a total Harry Potter fan, so buying J K Rowling’s first book after the boy wizard saga, ‘The Casual Vacancy’, was pretty much automatic. But I was disappointed. Not because of the lack of flying broomsticks, but the amount of unnecessary detail made it a difficult read (see my review of the book). So it was with some trepidation that I downloaded ‘The Cuckoo’s Calling’ onto my Kindle. No Quidditch, magic maps, or ‘he who shall not be named’, but a new detective. And not one of your obvious hero type sleuths. Cormoran Strike has lost a leg, is overweight, and sleeps on a camp bed in his rundown office, but he solves a complex murder. I’ll be interested to see how he and his assistant progress in ‘The Silkworm’.
Two small comments:
– I can’t remember what the title has to do with the story
– the final part of the book is a little too much ‘tell’, not ‘show’.
